The Importance of Quality Links

The world of SEO is fast-paced and ever-changing. This is undeniable. The methods used several years ago to garner interest from Google would never work today, and would probably lead to severe penalties from the web giants. Why is it so important these days to make sure you’re using links in a smart way?

Gaining the trust of search engines

With estimates that as much as 60% of the web consists of spam, search engines need a way to find the content it can trust to avoid directing users to spammy sites, which would make their service less usable. It looks at the links used by trusted websites and by way of association, the people they’re linking to are probably trustworthy too.

Link neighborhood

Spam links to spam, creating a network comprised entirely of useless webpages looking to sell dodgy products or steal your information, or simply waste space on the internet. You want your website to be in the respectable neighborhood with all the non-spammy, quality sites, so to get an invitation into this elite community, you’ll need to make sure you’re getting links from the right places. You don’t want links from the ‘bad’ neighborhood ruining your reputation.

A sign of popularity

If a site is popular, there will be lots of links pointing towards it. The more sites with links to your site, the better... within reason. While lots of links from PageRank 1 websites can help boost your standing in the eyes of search engines, it’s much better to have lots of links with PR 5, for example. This shows that you’re well established and situated in a network of respected sites which are popular in themselves, which can only suggest good things about your own website.

Avoiding penalties

It’s important that you find yourself an SEO expert to sort out your links. While it used to be the case that keyword-laden domain names and pages were the way to attract Google’s attention, that won’t cut it anymore. Instead, you need to find someone who can work your links into suitable content as naturally as possible. If every single link to your page just happens to use your favourite keyword, Google will see this as an attempt to manipulate its system, and you will see your search position fall. Google updates its algorithms all the time, so it’s important that you find someone who can interpret the way each update works so that they can come up with the best way to get your site through the other side without taking any knocks to its ranking.

Essentially, what you need to remember is that it's quality rather than quantity. It doesn't look great to Google if lots of suspicious, spammy sites are pointing towards you, as they will assume you are in the same neighborhood and penalise you. Instead, focus on producing great content to attract links from better sites and blogs from good neighborhoods to improve your rankings.
